How do we understand about masterbatch black

The development of suitable masterbatches has been a major effort for most copolymer producers. The first goal was to optimize the copolymer behavior during processing (avoidance of precuring) and crosslinking (fast curing). Moreover, masterbatches contain all the ingredients required by the specific application: antioxidants and UV stabilizers, metal deactivators, mineral fillers, carbon black, and processing aids.

On this article, we are going to talk about the black colorant, especially masterbatch black. Black colorants include Carbon Black, Iron Oxide, Mixed Metal Oxides and organic black colorants.

C.I. Pigment Black 11, Iron oxide (Fe3O4), has excellent dispersibility and migration resistance but it is limited by its thermal stability and low tinting strength. Under certain conditions, it accelerates the thermal decomposition of PVC.

C.I. Pigment Black 30, Mixed Metal Oxides (Cr/Fe/Mn/Ni oxides) are characterized by outstanding heat, weather, and chemical resistance.

Specialty products are available, such as the black pigment, Heliofast Black IR, for applications requiring high reflectance in infrared and polycyclic polymer-soluble dyes, such as Thermoplast Black M. Applications include use in polystyrene, PMMA, and unplasticized PVC.

The most popular term of black colorant is carbon black which is widely used to produce plastic products around us.

C.I. Pigment Black 7, Carbon Black, is simply carbon. It is by far the most popular black colorant for plastic applications. It is available in a range of particle sizes that determine its “jetness” or tinting strength and hue in white reduction (brownish to bluish greys). It shows excellent chemical, light, and weather resistance. The functional groups resulting from the production process affect carbon black’s performance and properties. Special grades of carbon black are recommended specifically for plastics and food packaging applications.

The major share (90%) of the world production of carbon black is used as reinforcing fillers in rubber; only 4% is used in plastics. The functionality depends on the carbon black type. Typical applications include pigmentation, UV-stabilization, and conductivity in PVC, PE, and ABS.

Masterbatch black is high concentrations of carbon black, typically 15 – 50% dispersed in thermoplastic resins which act as a carrier or binder. Other black pigments, such as nigrosine dye and bone black can also be used depending on the application and resin system. Masterbatches and concentrates allow plastic processors to utilize carbon black and other dry powders in a pre-dispersed pellet form, allowing easy incorporation in extrusion and molding processes. These masterbatches are then incorporated into various polymers to impart properties such as color, UV resistance, and electrical or thermal conductivity.

Masterbatch black is one of the most widely used colorants in the plastics processing industry now. Made from the carbon black, the grade is determined based on the requirement of a customer needs by the manufacturer. However, it must be of higher quality with the characteristics of black carbon and the way it is produced.
